An Insider’s Blink at Antisemitism in Hungary
“Heil Hitler!” - Sang a herd of ‘brave’ men proudly donning military uniforms with flags of the Hungarian Nazi Arrow Cross Party of WWII around their neck on a peaceful sunny afternoon in the summer of 2009.
Sitting at a table in the front line at a terrace café in downtown Budapest, my sister and my father fell into a momentary state of frozen stupor when one of them shouted at my sister “Sieg heil!”. Everyone on the terrace was rendered speechless and before anyone could say anything as they awakened from the shock, the terrifying group had left to chase after a bike rider, threatening “to get him like they will get all other Jews,” because he had yelled something at them they did not appreciate.
